Direction to Gardens
All directions are from Whitfield, following the one-way system out the back drive (do NOT retrace your route to the A465).
The Old Rectory, Thruxton, HR2 9AX
At the end of the back drive to Whitfield, turn right and continue for approximately 1 mile to Thruxton. Just before reaching the top of the small hill, by the church and small green triangle with footpath signs, turn right onto farm track. The Old Rectory is the red brick house straight ahead.
Court y Pella, Newton St Margarets, HR2 0QN
At the end of the back drive to Whitfield, turn left and follow road to T junction. Turn left and then take the second road to the right towards Abbey Dore for about a mile and a half, passing Abbey Dore Court gardens, until you meet the main road, the B4347. Turn right towards Hay then almost immediately left signed Ewyas Harold Common and follow signs to the restaurant Toi et Moi; keep going, despite the feeling that the road is about to peter out. Continue past Toi et Moi and approx. 1 mile further on you will see a red telephone box on your left. Just beyond that you pass Woodlands Farm on the right. Court y Pella is the next drive on the right.
After visiting Court y Pella and if you wish to proceed on to the two gardens at Forest Coal Pit, rather than follow the directions below from Whitfield, we suggest that you:
Turn left out of the Court y Pella drive and then right at the red telephone box towards Longtown. Left at the next T junction and follow single track road for about 2 miles until you reach another T junction. Turn right to Longtown; road drops down into the valley. Continue towards Longtown, keeping left once you reach it and follow signs to Clodock/Pandy and Abergavenny. You will reach the A465 in Pandy where you can then pick up the directions below for The Pant, turning right at Llanvihangel.
The Pant, Forest Coal Pit, Abergavenny NP7 7LT
At the end of the back drive to Whitfield, turn right and follow road through Thruxton to T junction with the B4348. Turn right and continue until you meet the A465 at Lock’s garage, where you turn right. Continue on the A465 and after the village of Pandy take the turning on the right to Llanvihangel Crucorney and Llanthony. Just before the Skirrid Inn on your right, turn sharp right, following signs to Llanthony. [NB: last point for mobile signal]
At the bottom of the small hill follow road round to left toward Llanthony. Go under railway bridge. After about 1 mile turn left following a sign to Partrishow and Forest Coal Pit (sign appears long before the turning). Follow this road through woods for about 2 miles. You will reach a point where five roads meet. Take sharp right up hill past ‘no through road’ sign (if you pass a grey telephone box, turn around and take first left). Follow this road up the hill for about 200 yards and at the first gateway on the right at the crest of the hill, you will see two green rubbish bins and a stone walled gateway on right with track leading through it to a big barn. This is The Pant.
Nant-y-Bedd, Forest Coal Pit NP7 7LY
Follow directions above for The Pant until you reach the point ‘where five roads meet’ where you go straight on, past the grey telephone box, for 4.5 miles. Nant-y-Bedd is by the small red post box.
Kentchurch Court, Pontrilas, HR2 9AX
At the end of the back drive to Whitfield, turn right and follow road through Thruxton to T junction with the B4348. Turn right and continue until you meet the A465 at Lock’s garage, where you turn right. Continue down the A465 until you reach Pontrilas where you turn left on the B4347 towards Kentchurch and Grosmont. After 1.5 miles, just after the Bridge Inn, fork left. After a further 0.5 mile the road bends sharp right down a short hill: the entrance to Kentchurch Court is at the bottom of the hill, opposite the church, through the white gates.
Grendon Court, Upton Bishop HR9 7QP
At the end of the back drive to Whitfield, turn right and follow road through Thruxton to T junction with the B4348. Turn right and continue until you meet the A465 at Lock’s garage, where you turn right then almost immediately left towards Much Dewchurch and Ross, still on the B4348. Continue through Much Dewchurch to T junction on A466, where you turn right then left after 200 yards to stay on the B4348 until you reach the junction with the A49. Turn right and follow down to junction with the A40 near Ross. Turn left on the A40 then at 2nd roundabout turn left on A449 towards Ledbury. After 2 miles turn right at X-roads with B4224 towards Upton Bishop and then the first entrance on the left. Cream cottage; wooden gate.
Brockhampton Cottage, Brockhampton HR1 4TQ
It is recommended that you visit Grendon Court first: it is a short drive on to Brockhampton from there. If you choose to do this, leaving Grendon Court turn right on the B4224, cross the junction with the A449 and continue up the B4224 until just after How Caple you will see a brown sign for Brockhampton Church. Turn left and up the hill for about 0.5 mile. After a set of farm buildings, take the driveway on the left over a cattle grid. The car park is 500 yards from the garden.
